My Colour Wheel of the Year

This is something I invented, because I like the idea of working through the spectrum of light as a continuous circle, moving with the seasons. I created the following diagram to illustrate this concept, and you can see that I have included the image of a human body and a lineal depiction of the colour spectrum. This is my rainbow year:

Red is the lowest frequency of light that we can see with the naked eye. Its wavelengths are long and slow. In terms of sound vibrations, this would be a very low pitch. This is why it is often considered a "masculine" colour, because the vibrations are associated with the low pitch of a man's voice. As it is the lowest frequency we see, I associate it with the lowest point of the sun, at Winter Solstice. Red is a popular colour to use during Yuletide celebrations. Red is also the colour of "stop" signs, signalling the end of the year and a period of rest. Red is also associated with the Muladhara chakra. The seed mantra is "lam".

Orange is a slightly shorter light wave, vibrating slightly quicker than red. Orange can be associated with the warm flicker of fire in the hearth during the coldest time of year. Orange is associated with the Svadhisthana chakra, and the seed mantra "vam".

Yellow is seen in the beautiful daffodils that spring up everywhere in March and April. It is the colour of egg yolks and the shining sun. At this time of year, the sun is triumphant over darkness, and the days become longer than the nights. Golden yellow is associated with the Manipura chakra at the navel. The seed mantra is "ram". Just above this we have the bright yellow of the Solar Plexus chakra, at the diaphragm.

Green is in the middle of the spectrum, and therefore it is associated with midsummer, the middle of the year. Green is the signal colour of "go", permission to follow our hearts. Green is associated with the Anahata chakra in the heart region of the chest. The seed mantra is "yam".

Turquoise, a greenish blue colour, reminds me of shallow water over a sandy beach. It's associated with the Vishuddha chakra at the collar bones or pit of the throat. The seed mantra is "ham". Closely related to Vishuddha is another chakra, located in the roof of the mouth, called Lalana. This is azure blue, the colour of the sky on a clear summer's day.

Indigo is the cooling colour of the Autumn Equinox. It is the colour of the evening sky, as the nights begin to grow longer than the days. This deep blue was traditionally considered a "feminine" colour, as it vibrates at a high frequency, like the high pitch of a female voice. It is associated with the Ajna chakra, directly behind the eyebrow centre. The seed mantra is "aum".

Violet is a bright bluish purple colour. It is at the highest end of the visible spectrum, and so it is associated with the very top of the head, the crown chakras. Above the third eye, we have the Manas chakra on the forehead. At the back of the head is the Bindu Visarga. On the top of the head there is Mahanada and Nirvana. Violet marks the final harvest of the year, as we transition into magenta, a cross-over colour which combines violet with red.

  1. I have often seen color wheels and the Wheel of the Year combined, but your explaination is so detailed that I am understanding the connection between Chakra, color, and the Wheel of the Year. Thanks so much for solidifiying this connection for me.

Back Again

I found my old blog by accident. I forgot all about it. Apparently I have to pay a subscription fee to be able to access the same features that used to be free. Maybe that's why I stopped blogging. I've been using instagram as a blog for a few years now. So it's been almost a decade since I last logged in here. What can I update you with? There's a little bit too much to say. I split up with the boyfriend I was blogging about last. He was a lovely guy, but it ran its course. I found a little studio flat in the centre of town and lived by myself for a year. That was a really nice experience. While I was there I met a new guy and started a whole new chapter. We moved to Weymouth in 2021. It will have been 4 years in August. The time has passed quickly. I turned 40 last year. I don't feel any older than when I was 30, but I feel frustrated that I could have done more with my time. The state of the world hasn't gotten any better, and I'm increasingly aw...

Approaching Summer Solstice

The tarot card I pulled today was The Knight of Swords. This card provokes us to consider activities we want to do, travel, being out and about, getting things accomplished. I feel lately that I just don't have the time or energy to do all the things. I am feeling tired, a little lost, somewhat fed up. I am trying to connect with what brings me joy, my passion. The Knight points to a need for silence and space to deepen our understanding. Clear cut answers are revealed when we focus our minds in meditation. The oracle card for today is Mystic Mermaid. She reminds us to pamper ourselves with a heavy dose of self-love. I think it's been difficult for me to remember to look after myself with the most basic things like a healthy diet and good sleep. I am having to remind myself to drink water and stop doomscrolling on my phone.

Mother's Day

Back in the Middle Ages, life revolved around folk religion, devoted in most of Europe to the Mother Mary. The beliefs of common people gradually changed as literacy increased and they were able to read the Bible for themselves and make their own interpretations. The printing press was a cultural revolution which allowed all kinds of previously forbidden books to be mass produced. I think that era would have felt similar to the emergence of the internet, and the way that suddenly new ideas could spread. Then as now there were a lot of conspiracy theories driving folk mad. Fear of physical and spiritual attack increased the intensity of Marian worship among all classes. With the dissolution of the monasteries and the Catholic church losing influence, public shrines to Mary became increasingly popular in England. Some conflated all the Marys of the Bible into one "mother of all". Mary represented every woman, and everyone was a child of Mary. She is explicitly linked to Eve, bu...
