Seasons and Elements

This is my diagram of the "wheel of the year" based on the data for my location. This is something I recommend everyone does - find out the meteorological data for where you live. I have written down the average temperature, rainfall, and sunshine for each month of the year. This has me thinking about the wheel of the year in Elemental terms. It was Aristotle that proposed that each of the Elements has two qualities each. Earth is cold and dry, because it represents molecules moving at their slowest, locked into a solid position. As the molecules warm up, they become more fluid. Water is cold and wet because it represents the liquid state. Air is hot and wet because it represents the water molecules evaporating upwards as they are heated. Fire is hot and dry because it represents the molecules in their ionised state. So, looking at the wheel of the year we can see the hot, cold, dry and wet quarters, which can indicate the Elemental symbolism of the seasons. We are currently moving out of the wet season and into the dry season, but it is still relatively cold. This would be symbolised by Earth. This is of course the time of year when we are witnessing new life spring up from the soil. It is from the cold ground that spring makes itself known.

Until the advent of modern medical science in the 19th century, physicians believed that the human body was composed of four humours, corresponding to the Classical Elements. These four humours were also associated with the seasons of the year. Phlegm was the humour of water and the winter. Blood was associated with air and spring. Yellow bile with fire and summer. Black bile with earth and autumn. In my opinion the seasons of spring ad autumn seem to have been mixed up, I don't know what the reasoning for this was. Perhaps it is because the system was Mediterranean and I don't know if their wet and dry seasons were different to ours. If they had a dry autumn and wet spring, then it makes sense to be this way round. But in Britain today we have a wet autumn and dry spring, despite spring being known for "April showers". The showers are much lighter and more brief than those of the autumn. I am basing this information on the data collected by the Meteorological Office.

The wheel of the year can in turn by applied to the magical circle, so that as we draw the circle around ourselves, we can envision the changing seasons and Elemental representations for each. I like to think of the East as the transition between Earth and Fire, then South transitions between Fire and Air, the West transitions between Air and Water, and finally the North transitions between Water and Earth. Wherever you are in the world, I think it's important to consider how these things apply to where you are. The purpose of observing the wheel and drawing the circle is to really connect with the here and now, to be fully present and awakened. That is what it means to me at least.

Back Again

I found my old blog by accident. I forgot all about it. Apparently I have to pay a subscription fee to be able to access the same features that used to be free. Maybe that's why I stopped blogging. I've been using instagram as a blog for a few years now. So it's been almost a decade since I last logged in here. What can I update you with? There's a little bit too much to say. I split up with the boyfriend I was blogging about last. He was a lovely guy, but it ran its course. I found a little studio flat in the centre of town and lived by myself for a year. That was a really nice experience. While I was there I met a new guy and started a whole new chapter. We moved to Weymouth in 2021. It will have been 4 years in August. The time has passed quickly. I turned 40 last year. I don't feel any older than when I was 30, but I feel frustrated that I could have done more with my time. The state of the world hasn't gotten any better, and I'm increasingly aw...

Approaching Summer Solstice

The tarot card I pulled today was The Knight of Swords. This card provokes us to consider activities we want to do, travel, being out and about, getting things accomplished. I feel lately that I just don't have the time or energy to do all the things. I am feeling tired, a little lost, somewhat fed up. I am trying to connect with what brings me joy, my passion. The Knight points to a need for silence and space to deepen our understanding. Clear cut answers are revealed when we focus our minds in meditation. The oracle card for today is Mystic Mermaid. She reminds us to pamper ourselves with a heavy dose of self-love. I think it's been difficult for me to remember to look after myself with the most basic things like a healthy diet and good sleep. I am having to remind myself to drink water and stop doomscrolling on my phone.

Mother's Day

Back in the Middle Ages, life revolved around folk religion, devoted in most of Europe to the Mother Mary. The beliefs of common people gradually changed as literacy increased and they were able to read the Bible for themselves and make their own interpretations. The printing press was a cultural revolution which allowed all kinds of previously forbidden books to be mass produced. I think that era would have felt similar to the emergence of the internet, and the way that suddenly new ideas could spread. Then as now there were a lot of conspiracy theories driving folk mad. Fear of physical and spiritual attack increased the intensity of Marian worship among all classes. With the dissolution of the monasteries and the Catholic church losing influence, public shrines to Mary became increasingly popular in England. Some conflated all the Marys of the Bible into one "mother of all". Mary represented every woman, and everyone was a child of Mary. She is explicitly linked to Eve, bu...
